Hey guys
I have been having a problem with loss of power when driving and just at idle. Was also due for a service so got my uncle to plug in his scanner and came up with 2 faults just chasing some possible causes and also a diesel specialist and maybe auto elec in s.e Melbourne.

So, the fuel rail pressure relief valve opens when the rail pressure goes too high, combined with your other symptoms I would say it's a no brainer to look at the SCV (suction control valve). It's the part that controls the rail pressure and also the part that fails most often on D40 Navaras.

You can try cleaning it first if cash is tight.

Given the circuit error I'd also consider cleaning all of the electrical connections to the injectors/rail as well as the ECU ground and both battery terminals. Use a jumper pack to maintain power to the vehicle while you've got the terminals off the cranker or you'll reset the radio and lose the trip meter info. Was the engine bay pressure washed recently?

Thanks guys
Haven't cleaned the engine bay but the first time it happend was after we got the carpets cleaned so i will have a look under/around the dash.

Any idea on cost of scv

Cleaning it will cost you about $3 ($1.50 for a litre of unleaded petrol to wash it and $1.50 for a litre of diesel to rinse it).

Replacing it will cost you up to $240 or so (genuine Nissan from a dealer). The genuine can be bought cheaper from Nizzbits (add postage). They've been spotted on eBay from time to time.

How rough is the idle? Mine was playing up the other week and I squeezed the priming bulb, put reds on and squeezed it again. Then started and it ran heaps better. Might have something blocking the lines or air in there. Free to try, let me know how you go.

Thats partly the problem its not really 'rough' it just has no guts when it happens. Add to that its one of those super awesome intermittent things at the moment

Thanks bud
I'll speak to my uncle and see if he is free to have a look at it for me as im not overly confident with mechanical work.

Unfortunately as soon as you add the word "intermittent" to any vehicle problem description, you should be interpreting that word as "most likely electrical". Don't replace the SCV immediately, because it might be a waste of money - while the SCV is definitely a culprit in this area, there are other causes. Clean the SCV by all means, that NEVER hurts, but go over all of the injector/rail/battery connections while you're at it.

So i had the nav at the diesel mechanic yesterday and thankfully the issue occurred. The SCV had failed and was replaced and i also got to learn a bit about how it all works.
If anyone needs a mechanic in eastern area of Melbourne i would recommend deisel tech in lillydale. Reasonable cost and very helpful/informative people
