worn steering rack

forgive me if this has been covered, but the search didnt'
pick it up

i took the truck to pedders for to have the alignment looked at, i got a couple things expected, lower ball joints and i need camber bushes, fair enough i get that

next i was told that the steering rack is well worn and its easier to replace it.

their cost is 1800 bucks (fitted) on the rack,

i would love to know

A) is this a common thing, the guy at the shop said it is and that hiluxs are worse off for this

b) can you recondition them

admitedly i got 180k on my 07 RX and i do expect some stuff to need replacing,

but the steering rack????????

Maybe they are right but I would be getting a second opinion.

oh definetly plan on a second opinion,

i am curious as to anyone else has heard of the steering rack wearing and becoming a problem,

i may have some time to jack it up and play around with it a little tommorrow, seeing as i need to rotate some tires around anyway,

any other input?
