G'day guys, I own a 2003 D22 ST-R ZD30 Navara and just want to give you all a heads up about a problem I'm having with my turbo and engine. The car has only done 134,000 KM and the turbo decided to snap one of its fins off (due to age and becoming brittle), which flew into my engine and has now rooted one of the pistons. I now need a whole new block. Get your turbos checked if theyre over 100,000 km old.

G'day Jay , mate I've got a good block and other bits and pieces cheap if you're interested

If you dont havge a turbo timer. Fit one.

Consider a intercooler to as they will catch the bits of the turbo.

Thanks for the offer Kempseyken I found a fully reconditioned ZD30 from like the last series of the D22 before the 2.5 CRD took over. So hopefully she goes well :) And yeah dave ive managed to find an ARB turbo timer and now looking into an intercooler. Thanks heaps guys much appreciated :)

Was there any signs before she blew? squealing noises or anything? or did it just go bang without any heads up?

Oh No !!!

My navara ZD30 has just developed a new air whistle !!!!

Seriously hope that this is not one of your symptoms for a turbo blade missing ???

Ps I fitted a turbo timer within the first 10,000klms.

Now got a total of 91500klm's on the clock with up until next week or two been doing 10,000klm services.

Swapping to 5,000klm servicing.

Mick, unbolt the small intake part on the front of the turbo and see how much movement there is in the compressor wheel bearings.

Hey Dave, do you know if that gasket should be replaced if removed to inspect like you said?

Don't worry, just found it in the manual, should be replaced.

Pete, pulled mine off a few months back and reused it.

No drama's with mine as its a rubber gasket.

My turbo comes off at the end of the week for the new one.

Ill get a video of how a looked after turbo should be bearings wise.

I have had mine since day one though and had a turbo timer installed since 3000km's.

Its not a bad idea to check it out.

Mines done 215,000km's and the turbo is still good.

However some guys on here have had the compressor wheel let go at less then 100,000km's.

95% of my driving is at night though, so not much stop start stuff etc.

Hey Dave,
Going to a turbo specialist in the morning to check it out ? will update tomorrow.
Then If required I will check the bearing play of the turbo ( Hope it is not the turbo ).

Good luck Mick.

Turbo's are simple design's. There not much that can go wrong with them.

interesting. so you would highly recommend an intercooler and turbo timer Dave? mines a 06 model 3.0 litre. hmmm i might as well get an intercooler and exhaust package from roo systems maybe? my k's are about 90 i think when i last checked.

Intercooler helps catch any bits of blown turbo if that happens. Saves it from going through the motor and rooting it. I just plan on doing 5000 K services, letting her cool down (turbo timer) and keeping an eye on the turbo (inspections), wont be putting an intercooler on myself, not at this point anyway.
