turned out to be a dodgy fuel primer...

ran the engine straight off a container of fuel, ran fine, no air bubbles in the line
ran the engine through the prefilter off a container of fuel, ran fine, no air bubbles in the line
ran the engine through the prefilter off the cars fuel tank, ran fine, no air bubbles in the line
