Hi all, just got my rig home after getting a harrop e locker fitted, and it does not all seem ok. From the start I had been told the d22's had a fault or shoddy rear diff, so after the lsd wasnt working properly it got locked. After fitting it now whines after 2-2500 revs and from 60k up. Not consistently though, when backing off the accelerator or on half throttle like when you are maintaing speed on the highway. My questions are, is it possible the wrong ratio has been installed? Could they have re used bearings (they told me they were having trouble finding some) or is it normal for it to whine? Vehicle is a 12/06 d22 with 103xxx on the clock.

Help appreciated
Dave

No locker engaged on hard surfaces, unless they reverse wired the switch, red light comes on if switched on. And 15000 ks is a long while to put up with the noise, is that a locked diff or factory?

Have a e locker myself but in the front. Great bit of gear and works really well. I believe you had been mislead from the start. The lsd in the rear of the d22 is classed as one of the best. Strong, durable, lasts and actually works if you know how to drive it. I would have put a lsd back in it if it was shot. This is the reason i went a front locker installed as it is useless once it lifts a wheel.

As for you whine issue take it back and have them test drive it. Unsure what itll be though

I had a similar problem, did they put new pinion bearings on it? The D22 rear diff is hard to set up correctly as you need to get the correct shim thickness. I went from 2.2mm to 1.8mm on each side as the width of the carrier was slightly larger. If you do not preload these bearings correctly your pinion gear will touch the outer locker casing as it has too much room to move. Id take it to a diff specialist personally.

Had mine fitted by a diff centre and they charged for new bearings so I hope they're in there.., i had wanted to go front locker first but the LSD centre war beyond repair and it was $100 cheaper for a locker than the new LSD centre.. So there wasn't many thorts wasted there.. Deff one of the best mods I've on my ute.., thinking a front one is on the cards for after Xmas..

Most D22s have the C200 rear diff, which is essentially the same as a r200 diff, which Nissan use in all the performance cars.
The LSD shims may need to be replaced if you have a really worn diff, this is usually not that expensive, lots of people DIY.
These diffs, well maintained are usually well regarded as good reliable and strong preforming diffs.

The noise your referring to sounds like your diff was not setup correctly. Diff wine comes from the backlash and pre-load not being set correctly.
I would take it back to the shop and ask them to look over the vehicle.

this i did not know...i have a nice mini spool r200 sitting at home that could come in handy then... :p

off topic here i have noticed that my back seems to drag on sharp slow turns. Im assuming that its my diff and is really quite tight. anyone else hav this issue with the standard lsd?

after i reshimmed my old d21 diff i did
but i over-shimmed it so it was really tight.

Yeah thats the thing it could be aftermarket in there as ive only just bought it. I assumed it was tight and I havent had a chance to really test it yet so will see

Cheers for the help, I have been told a few things by different people about the rear diffs, some say they are exceptionally strong, and others say they have issues if you use them in certain ways. In particular heavy loads pushed in reverse gear, either in low range or high. I was quoted somewhere around the 2k mark to fully rebuild the lsd, and 2200 for the locker. No brainer.
So the problem they told me was the backlash wasnt set up properly and the pinion gears need replacing, at their cost. So what started out as an upgrade turned into a rebuild and upgrade. They were hesitant to admit a problem to start but have admitted fault and are willing to accept liability. We will see how the next bit goes.
