Hey Guys

since putting 33 on standard 4.375 gearing... the car it a little labored, i was wondering if it possible to swap both front a rear 4.625 ring/pinion from the Qd32 (R180, H233b) into the zd30 d22 diffs (r180 and c200)

would this be a hassle free swap, well the front should be, however the rear being a different diff would i have any dramas?

cheers

Front no, rear maybe. Im pretty sure patrols run a 9" or 9.25" rear crown gear. I have a feeling the Nav's run slightly smaller. Will check in the next few days when I put my locker in.

As the fronts are both c180s you should not have an issue.
there is just two things to look out for
* if you end up with a wd21 pathfinder diff they are shorter and cvs need modifications. just get something from the same year range nav and it should be sweet
* also just double check the cv flange, some are 6 and some are 5 bolts. my experience has told me the 5s are usually the r200 from the v6, but this has been inconsistent and some r180s are 5 bolt too....just check.

The h233b is a larger assembly and your need the entire assembly, it will bolt in fine however :
* the LSD unit uses the same shims as the r200.......the patrols h233b center is larger and use larger shims....so either way you do it, the navara rear LSD unit is not going to be that much better, besides having a 23.3cm crown-wheel instead of a 20cm one.
* you will need to change your tail shaft, the 233b has a larger flange connecting to the diff. once i changed the flange on the diff itself....but there is two different sized bolts depending on year range and you need to be lucky enough to get one of each with the same sized bolt....
* everything else should be peaches

fire me a PM if you have any questions. Have done fair amount of work with these things.

Very interesting!

i guess if worse case scenario and i get the R180a with mismatching CV bolt pattern i could just use the ring/pinion and use my original housing.

the rear seems to be the main issue, Looks like i wont be able to salvage any of the c200 rear if i do the change over..

So if the yolk/bolt pattern differs and i need another tail shaft... i take it, i just need to find a unit with the tail shaft attached. They don't alter there bolt pattern at the gearbox??? just the diff.??

hey mate, i did the ratio conversion earlier this year. it was easy as. i sourced a 4.625 c200 crown and pinion set from www.4x4parts.com in the states, that was about $600 to my door, and picked up a r180 front diff from a qd32 nav from a wreckers for $300

the front diff is a straight swap, though like other people have mentioned, be sure to check the flanges to make sure they bolt up to your nav. if they don't you should be able to mix-and-match half shafts from the diff you pull out of your truck, just be sure to get it shimmed properly.

the rear diff, i got a diff place to install the crown and pinion. in my opinion its well worth doing, it makes a huge difference to the truck.

I also looked into this conversion after my front gears chewed each other out. 4x4parts.com could easily get the 4.625 rear ratios I needed but they have discontinued the front for some reason. My only other option was to get a R200 front diff and get 5.14 ratios which they had for the R200 and C200 diffs. These however would have been too high as I would need to massive tires to stop the truck revving its guts out.

In terms of fitting the gears I recommend you get a shop to do it. The amount of $$ I have had to spend on bearings and specialised tools such as a dial guage and stand, needle torque wrench and getting the right sized shims for the rear diff has been a nightmare. A much cheaper and hassle free option would be to buy a wrecked diff with the correct ratios and bolt that in

Thanks for your help.

looks like it would be just as cheap or cheaper to grab the ring and pinion from 4x4parts than exchange the c200 with a h233b with 4.625.
people are looking for the 600+ mark for h233b diff out of QD32 etc also means i wont have to worry about drive shaft bolt patterns.
Then again it wont be just a swap out when dealing with a new ring/pinion as i will have to set pre-load/back lash which mean dial indicators :(

I'll keep an out out for a r180a QD32 4.6, if i can get one for cheap i will look further into a new ring gear set or diff...
but it will do for now!

Decisions decisions....

You will need a needle torque wrench or some means of measuring rotational torque to set the pinion bearing preload, When I rebuilt my front diff this was the hardest thing I found to do. The workshop manual explains it pretty well. The standard shims and spacers should give you the correct preloads (pinion and carrier) and backlash. Another problem is trying to source replacement bearings if you choose to replace them

Okay

i believe i have found a set of diffs of a 1997 QD32 d22 navara.
So R180a and H233b in 4.625.

Now before i take this any further i need to make sure everything will bolt up.

Will the r180 bolt straight up, eg will it bolt straight to the sub frame and im about to find out the CV bolt pattern, need a 6 bolt.

with the h233b, are they the same width, are the leaf carriers in the same position, finally the rear drive: you said the flange was bigger will does it have the same bolt number and spacing however its just space further out?? or does it require the Qd32 drive shaft and if so will that bolt up to the zd30 transfer???

Finally the items are in mid QLD.. i need them posted to NSW does anyone know of a good cheap courier or any truckies that are heading through that was and down to nsw that have spare room with money there way.

cheers

ya done it

they line up did this myself changed over the rear diff and it only cost $200 to get it, have you got the front my mate has a 4,6 in the shed (he changed to 4,88) the 4,6 would have to be the best mod with the larger wheels you can do the ute is just better off road

Im changing my ratios to 4.88's. Curios to see if the nav over revs at 100 Km/hr+
I have calculated that My nav which currently sits at 2500 rpm @100Km/hr will now rev at 2800rpm @ 100 Km/hr

4.88's are going in tomorrow - Friday at $900 an end its not a cheap operation but that includes all new bearings and oil seals. Both diff will have E lockers in them. The Nav should be quiet the weapon off road now. Will post more when I get to drive it on Wednesday

Just got a set of diffs sent from QLD, rear is good but the front is Stuffed
the outer pinion bearing collapsed and allowed the pinion to flop around and grind out the diff centre carrier.

SOOOO I need a R180a 4.625 front diff unit!! ASAP
