Hi,

I have noticed a bit of a ticking/rattly noise when sitting at idle.
When I push in the clutch the noise dissappears.

Anyone have any ideas?

On a 08 ST-X Manual diesel.

Regards Murph

Just depressing the clutch should not change anything in the engine (forward of the flywheel) or behind the thrust/throw-out bearing (gearbox).

So the FIVE items I'd be looking at are:

1) Thrust/throw-out ARM (separate to the bearing). I had one break in a Kombi, fixed it with an arc welder.

2) Thrust/throw-out bearing.

3) Pressure plate - either the bearing face, or the ends of the springs themselves.

4) Clutch.

5) If DMF fitted - flywheel springs. The dual mass flywheel has springs inside it that allow the clutch face to move slightly differently to the flywheel itself, designed to absorb fluctuations in the rotation of the engine. There have been reports of these springs coming loose.

Wait, there's one more thing it could be.

Check the hydraulic lines on the firewall. Sometimes they rattle - it's possible that you don't notice it while the vehicle is moving.

Slip some packing foam in behind all the hydraulic lines and see if it goes away.
