power window switch removal

I'm looking to remove the power window switches in our d40 so I can spray them silver.

Before I go snapping clips or breaking things using assumed knowledge ... can anyone tell me exactly how to remove the switches?

Do the door skins need to come off?

From memory I used a butter knife under the back end to gently pry them up.There is a large clip in the front and a press fit clip in the rear

This pic from Ebay shows what the front clip is like.
The rear should just pop up with a little effort
