Sheared wheel studs

Sheared two wheel studs off last week and apparently there are washers behind the rim that mates onto the surface of the hub. Two had failed and gave the tyre some free play which snapped the bolts off. Anyone heard of this happening?

I have lost 3 studs before on my D22. I put it down to loose wheel nuts developing free play
