Hi has anyone else had a code come up p0735 - 5th gear ratio in correct. Does anyone know what this might be. .

Possible causes
- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Shift solenoids
- Transmission mechanical problems
- Transmission hydraulic control circuit

Tech notes
Start by inspecting the transmission fluid level and condition, and change fluid if necessary.

When is the code detected?
P0735 is detected when A/T cannot be shifted to the 5th gear position even if electrical circuit is good.

Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Incorrect transmission shifting

P0735 Description
This diagnosis monitors actual gear position by checking the torque converter slip ratio calculated by Transmission Control Module (TCM) as follows:

Torque converter slip ratio = A x C/B

A: Output shaft revolution signal from revolution sensor

B: Engine speed signal from Engine Control Module (ECM)

C: Gear ratio determined as gear position which TCM supposes

If the actual gear position is higher than the position (5th) supposed by TCM, the slip ratio will be more than normal. In case the ratio exceeds the specified value, TCM judges this diagnosis malfunction.

I wonder - since it happens quite a bit - if it's just the electrical connection for the revolution sensor, or if there's a little something caught in the sensor that's making it difficult to get a good reading.

The first thing that comes to mind is having it flushed and cleaned (that's the recommended first step) but you've already done that - although I can't help but think that this is what triggered the fault.

I am wondering if the flush didn't get everything out, or if some of the old fluid is clashing with the new and it's congealed in the sensor. That's a problem that's happened before - even a different kind of oil (most likely because of the additives) causes problems like this. It'll be one of the reasons why Nissan are so pedantic about using the right oil in the gearbox (so, so fussy in fact that if you use anything else, you void the gearbox warranty).

The manual has a fair bit of testing to go through, you'd probably have to have a workshop geared to auto transmissions to do much of it. Like the line pressure test, which is crucial to the decision to use 5th gear. The manual does give quite a few hints to look at, but you'd have to be going over these in detail with the car at hand to decide which path to take.
