Ignition timing is usually done from #1 cylinder. The manual has some detail about disconnecting the "idle compensator hose" and installing a plug, then ensuring that the engine rpm sits around 800 +/- 50. Ignition timing should be (at BTDC) 3 +/- 2 - the manual doesn't say any more than this. You advance it by turning the distributor downwards, (clockwise from the top of the distributor) or retard it by turning it the other way.

I gotta say, I love diesels!
