Hi guys I would like to tell you my story that has been f'ing with me for a while now. (Caution very long story but one that would make anyone absolutely furious)

So early this year I bought a 2006 ZD30 D22 from my boss who had it as a weekend car. I got it for a low price and one that would allow for a few thousand more to be spent to get it in proper order and roadworthy and registered with insurance. He had told me everything about it that he knew was wrong or needed attention before I bought it. I drove it every now and then for a couple weeks before it started to make a rattly noise that got progressively worse and the engine lacked power. He had recently had the turbo overhauled for a massive cost and thought that it was that, that was playing up and making a noise every now and then.

First I went to a local ultratune to inspect the noise and the guy there told me it was the timing chain and charged me nothing for his time as he had taken some belts off to try and work it out, but he also said that I should take it to a "4wd expert" in bayswater as he would know better. So I went to this guy and his best opinion was that it was the input shaft to the gearbox, which didnt make sense but he was an "expert" so I persisted and took it to a gearbox and diff mechanic also in bayswater. These guys said it couldn't be that as it still happened when the clutch was pushed in, they said that it was the valve bucket shims needing adjusting and would only take a day to fix up. (This is where the nightmare starts) They soon found that the timing chain needed to be replaced as well as some sprockets as they had some teeth broken etc. So I bit the bullet and told them (shouldn't be qualified mechanics but said they could do it) to do what they needed on that and it would cost around $2500. This took around 3 weeks in which almost everyday they said it would be ready the next as they had issues with timing adjustments and other rubbish.

By now I was alreading fuming but then came more, they were saying it was making a 'noise' but at the same time giving different stories like 'its not starting' and 'its not put back together yet'. About a week later they told me that the head should be taken off to inspect the pistons and head for any damage or warping and found nothing (found that out after about another week). But they said it should be sent off to be checked out by a head specialist so I thought yeah ok why not and they reco'd the whole thing for $1200.

By now the bill is really stacked up but once they had it back plus a few days later they told me that the engine would have to be taken out for the head to be put back on ( which i confirmed as true with nissan) so this has taken another 2 weeks or so. They told me the cost would be around $5000 all up for this work and after all this time I don't really give a FK anymore I just want it done. The worse part i have just found out today as they have 'only just noticed' is that the caps that the crankshaft bearings sit in have broken and come loose and bent the crankshaft so pretty much the whole block is f'ed and needs to be replaced.

Wow can't believe these 'mechanics', now going through VACC as they are obligated to do their jobs properly and know what they are actually doing to find out what the hell is going to happen from here. Im 18 and have just finished year 12 and only have a labouring job at the moment, after almost 3 months including missing easter weekend and many other plans, its just unbelievable how bad my ordeal has been.

If you have read this far good on you and cheers, I hope none of you ever have a problem like this.

Hey mate, thats a shit run of luck your having hopefully it only gets better for you..
Can i ask who these mechanics are?

Thanks mate! I'm not sure if I should say any names yet until it's all sorted out but I will as soon as I can

I'm sorry to hear your pain young fella. I'm sure you don't deserve the way the FKWITS have treated ya. The only thing I see is that your timing chain was almost cactus. These other ning nongs have reached to hard costing you too much money. Look up- YD.25.com.au if you ever have a timing chain issue. I'm sad to say though, my help advice won't help ya now. But, I honestly hope ya get a fair and honest resolution and some decent compensation for the all round out of pocket costs. Next time before you spend any money, ask a question to the guys on this forum. They have helped me out so much already. Once again, I hope you get some relief from the end result mate.

Mate, my zd30 has 280000ks of hard work done on and off road, still drives like new.
Your ute is running big mud tyres and a custom looking tray, the underneath of the alloy bullbar is completely smashed in, I reckon old mate has absolutely trashed that d22 off road and has sold his problem to you.

Thanks mate I've heard about the duplex timing chains if that's what your talking about but yeah too late, don't worry tho I haven't payed a cent yet but that's also the problem because I still don't have my car for that reason
My plan has always been to use this forum to the full extent I can but for it to go from one little problem and get progressively bigger and worse I couldn't really do much

Gadgets, yeah he did do his fair bit of hard stuff and I knew that buying it but for the price I bought it I would have been able to fix things as I went along but all this for nothing had really set me back

I did forget to mention also he had only just reco'd the gearbox with a new clutch aswell along with the turbo pretty much all at the same time so I expected no problem with them and still don't

Also, you would need to be some **** of a boss to sell a car that was clearly trashed off road to a young guy .

Keen eye, Gadgets. Can't say I disagree. Looks like the front end landed on something.

It also looks like it's been set up for more than the average off-road excursion. That's not a bad thing, but it was probably used hard, even if just on the weekends.

I hope the thing doesn't cost you any more (except in fuel!).

Appreciate your input guys but I have to stress that I got it at a very low price and if it's needed after all this he has said he will help out

Hopefully some of the more mechanically minded navara owners will jump in soon with some suggestions as how to help you with your problems
. Ask as much as you like before you hand over your hard earned$

I'm skeptical about the bent crankshaft but the car has been with these "mechanics" and they've pulled it to bits already. I'd hesitate to let them do more to it if it's avoidable.

Yeah I don't want the to touch it again I'll see what VACC can do and if I'll have to take it to Vcat, but my ideal outcome would be these idiots paying proper mechanics to fix it with whatever is needed (block, crankshaft etc) and I pay what that would normally cost. Considering the head has just been reco'd as well as the turbo and everything else was working fine besides the timing chain

Ok guys so outcome has been that 360 Gearboxes and Diffs in Bayswater VIC f'd me over for $4100 to come out of it with absolutely no benefit and the engine had to be replaced for further costs. I have bought a second hand motor and it is going in over the next few days at a different mechanic that has also organised pick up of the car and stuffed engine for me.

It can't even be put into words how pissed off I am at the guys for stinging me that much money that is completely wasted and does not benefit me whatsoever. All I am able to do about it is give them the worst word possible to everyone that is in need of a mechanic in my area. It has been such a difficult 4-5 months with them I'm just so f***ing angry and feel so helpless to being able to do anything about it.

Feel sorry for you man! I have learnt a lesson like yours when I was younger and now I will check forums and google for reviews about any shop if I do go to any for anything I can't do.. Put it this way out of all the bad shit at least you got heaps of parts now that maybe you can use as spares or even sell to make some coin back

Its a shame that you paid them and didnt just get the car and take it to another mechanic for a full report on what they have done and what needs to be done going forward.

What most people dont realise is that no workshop has any legal rights to keep your car for RANSOM until you pay them for work that has been done it is fully illegal and under the eyes of the law is classed a s theft.

Sorry i didnt read this earlier, maybe fair trading can help you get some of your csh back?

Cheers man
Yeah I know that's the plan but I don't see myself being able to make too much back
Will put a list on a thread in the sales section when I have the parts available

I didn't know that Nathan wish you did give me the advice earlier! Haha
I was under the impression that I would be stuck until I had payed
