Looking a buying a compact uhf radio will mainly be used for trips and chitter chatter between vehicles the 3units I am looking at are GME3100 Unidon7700? and Oricon 300
any thoughts or advise on the better of the 3
Thanks

Tried googling your uniden but it doesn't exist -- wrong model number?

Anywho -- I've a little 80ch uniden that works just fine (came with a 4.5db antenna for $300).

I believe i have the same uniden as 'nakedape' is referring to; http://www.uniden.com.au/australia/p_uh7700nb_ant_index.asp ??
it's input and output reception dropped dramatically in the first month of having it. couldn't pick up someone 100 meters away. even tried a new 6db Ariel with the same response.
might of just been a lemon of a UHF but would be interesting to see if anyone else has had similar issues with this particular unit.

It may not suit your purpose, however I'll share.
After having a good hand held I wouldn't use a fixed radio again.
They come in 5 watt max and water resistant or proof and you can screw in and external anttena for the vehicle. Gme, uniden and icom. All do them, ICOM considered the best by reputation. I use the uniden uh078sx. $300 from memory

Edit: The UH078sx is waterproof, has a remote mic/ speaker, dual desktop charger, car charger, 2 lith ion 1040mah batteries.

A bit off topic.
I just bought a hand held GME TX6100, It is full 5 watt, and has a removable aerial so with an adapter you can connect it to a proper vehicle aerial. Best of both worlds!
The only problem is vehicle charging, but I'm told that you can do it.

Last weekend I was getting a 2-3 Kilometer range in the Vic high country

i am currently using a GME TX3540. bought it and an antenna of ebay for about 400. Cant complain at all. fantastic piece of gear, everything is customizable. From the screen colour to the extra 90 channels. It is the flagship model though so you would expect a few features. best thing is no holes in the dash. just a 10mm hole in a blanking plate in and everything is hidden.

Yep, that's the little bugga -- mine has never missed a beat, so maybe you got a dud?

I got the uniden 5w hand held twin pack as well same model as the one mentioned above. Great little uni comes in handy navigating other trucks through obstacles instead of yelling with hand gestures.

Also a godsend when camping. I hate walking to the amenities or shop while camping then getting back to find out the Missus wanted something. Just need to get a car mount aerial. When I first bought it it was just going to be a temporary solution till I got a incar unit but I think I'll stick with it.

Thanks to all that replied decided to go with the
GME TX3540
As the old saying goes
Out of site out of mind
Thanks
