Hey 08Kingcab,

It won't be long until we find out. DP Chip received the chip yesterday and will have it back to me by end of next week.

They affirmed to me that the chip performance figures were "average" over several chips tested and that the kw and Nm reading was on mid setting which allowed for further increaes to handle exhaust mods, bigger intercooler etc.

Cheers,

DJ

hey deejay mate,

on monday will be calling up 20, yes 20, different exhaust mobs around perth after having a quick look in the yellow pages.

going to ask prices for:

2.5" from turbo back with or without cat and with or without muffler
3" from turbo back with or without cat and with or without muffler
2.5 or 3 inch (or 2.75 if 3 cant be done) dump pipe to fit the stock system

Hey Maddogrc,

Go you good thing! I don't know that you'll need to call all 20 as I reckon you'll start to get a feel for whats decent and whats BS after about a third of that. I'll be very interested to hear your results though.

I'm still thinking dump pipe only as I like a quiet exhaust and from what I can tell, the system looks pretty free once you're past the DP or maybe the cat. Pretty sure removing the Cat would be seen as a warranty/ legal issue with Nissan so don't want any hassles.

I hope to hear back from DP by mid week with a response like, sorry DJ, you were only getting 50% of the power due to a failed diode or something....... I mean you never know eh?

Cheers mate,

DJ

there was a thread a while ago asking about if changing the exhaust would void the warranty.

if you do get a new dump pipe then you're really 'supposed to' put a cat in. if i get a full system it'd be a cat that bolts on and can be put on/off.

in terms of warranty, it may void it, but i would like to see nissan blame the failure due to an exhaust...

as joshy once said under the lines of 'they dont have to prove the exhaust did it, but you have to prove that the exhaust didnt do the damage/issue'

will be calling up tomorrow, was up from 8:30am to 1pm doing study for an exam today so didnt have any time and it finished at 5:10, so they were mostly closed

tomorrow it is!

Makes me rethink my 3" system after reading all that, I think combined with a chip and other mods the 3" work better but as a standard setup 2.5" seems the way to go.......?
I'm sure they guy that did mine said the standard system he pulled off was 2.5".....?

standard system seems to be like 2.33?

i'll get the callipers out and do a quick check...

EDIT:

54mm or 2.1260 inches

EDIT:

one of the guys i called said hes located next to a gas conversion mob, and hes seen d22's with 3 inch systems that sound good, but they lose torque.

other guys say you lose torque and for towing it just goes to the crap, even uses up more fuel!

I measured my stock system and it was 2 1/4"? The system I got from Beaudesert Exhaust was 2 3/4".

I think once I have a chip installed I will definetely need to stick it on the dyno to get some real results hopefully, my 3" system isnt really any louder than standard at all. Still has a cat just a 3" hi flow further back and 2 resignators (think they are called that) from Taipain/ARB. To me it has a noticable power gain already, especially on hills and towing.

Nice work Maddogrc.

This is partly why I'm thinking of just removing the restriction of the dump pipe only. I think there are better performance gains elsewhere and the original system looks OK.

I want my system to look standard, sound standard and I have no problem with the Cat being in there, it helps burn some of the crap out of the exhaust. Doing my bit for mother nature ;-)

Cheers,

DJ

still means you have to buy a new cat and have that put into the system, and cats start around 300 or so, so a 350 dump and 300 cat is 650+labour?

i reckon a whole system is probs just worth it instead for the extra few bucks.

i'll have to further look into the guy that might be able to do the system for 300-500 cause that sounds pretty good to me! said he wants a proper look at the car when its on the hoist first though.

After installing my system I reckon the stock Cat is more restrictive than the Dump Pipe, just by looking at it.

After installing my system I reckon the stock Cat is more restrictive than the Dump Pipe, just by looking at it.

the dump pipe itself isnt ALL that restricted apart from the small hole for gases to flow into it and the horrible angle the gases flow into it (they basically hit a wall and are then forced down, no smooth flow)

the worst bit about the dump is that you have a small hole for the gases to come into and then you got a big long stupid cat that the exhaust gases have to pass through until it can finally somewhat escape.

so you got the restriction of the small dump pipe hole as well as the restriction of the cat itself, so a double restriction.

this compared to a nice 2.5 inch curved and 'flowing' dump allows for a quicker flow, less restriction and lower EGT.

but as i was told about the 3 inch systems also, you need to watch out that the car doesnt over boost and cause issues with the engine.

dump pipe on the ZD30 is fairly restrictive. mainly due to the sharp turn the gasses have to do, the huge angle going into the cat and due to the layout of the wastegate flow cutting into turbo flow. the tight sharp turn has the effect of making it even more restrictive especially at lower pressures.

the cat it self may not be to bad. hard to say without knocking out the insides and seeing if it performed better.
big problem is due to it being so close is it doesn't give much time for the swirl out of the turbo to straighten up. ie you have lot of turbulent gasses trying to get through. really need to let the gasses straigthen out, let the pulses smooth out and it will flow a lot better.

The engineers that designed the dump pipe might disagree. In Fluid Dynamics 101, you learn that liquids (gases behave in a very similar manner) don't care about directional changes as there is not a lot of momentum to overcome. As long as the differential volume in the corner is greater than the volume of the pipe you won't experience any issues with flow.

That's the theory. In practice, it might behave a little differently, but not to the point of disaster.

Hi Guys,

Just an update of the DP Chip saga. As you may have remembered from previous posts, after not being happy with the performance of the chip, I sent it back to DP Chip for evaluation and checking.

I sent the chip back on Wednesday last week and it arrived at DP on Friday. I was told that there is usually a 7-10 day turn around. So I figure I'll just call on Tuesday for an update and was told the chip was still sitting on the bench and that they'd call me.

I waited until almost close of business on the east coast before ringing today. This time I was told that the chip is currently under "Live testing" whatever that means. I was told the chip seems to be functioning correctly so far.

I then asked when I was likely to get it back as it has been almost 30 days since I first received the chip and I reckon if the chip performance wasn't going to be any batter than what it was originally, then I'd maybe prefer a refund as 1500 would go a long way towards other mods.

Have now been told that I'll probably get the chip back on Tuesday but more likely Wednesday.

Thus far:
Their initial freight of the goods to me was fast and good.
Their chip looks great and is well finished etc.
Not happy with the chip's performance
Not happy with their non existant 24/7 tech support
Not happy with their customer relations.

Overall : Very Disappointed

Unless they find something terribly wrong with the chip, I reckon their chip is bogus and their promises on the website are exaggerated and fanciful.

I really hope the chip is found faulty or they are able to trick it up.

More will follow next week .....

Cheers,

DJ
